imagine

I was standing at the bus stop [when she walked past].

She looked the queue up and down and then, under her breath to her young daughter: oh god! imagine! And then climbed into her car.

At first it made me a little angry (how elitist!)

And then, just sad.

Catching the bus is one of my favourite things. Humanity in all its glory:

snatches of conversations you might never otherwise hear [really??]
friendships started [days lifted]
seats given up for older folk [the goodness of the world restored]
drivers waiting as the wobbly find a place to settle [relief]
tears welling across the aisle [hang in there]
(and, at the end of the day) heads resting wearily on lovely.ones' shoulders [exhale].

Imagine. missing out on that.
